Development options sought for Oaky River Dam in NSW

Armidale Regional Council, a local government body in the New England and Northern Tablelands regions of New South Wales, Australia, invites expressions of interest by 11 February from suitably qualified hydropower developers to provide preliminary options and feasibility information for future generation at the Oaky River Dam to provide affordable power to the Armidale region and beyond.

The council acquired the Oaky River Dam in December 2022 with the primary purpose of increasing water security for Armidale and the region, and said it has been approached by, and is seeking to engage with, renewable energy entities to assist the Council identify feasible renewable energy project options. The Oaky River Dam includes historical hydroelectric infrastructure that is not currently operational following a dam wall failure in 2013. The dam and hydropower plant on the Oaky River, a perennial stream of the Macleay River catchment, were commissioned in 1956.
