Unlocking low head hydro potential from existing water infrastructure in the Netherlands

The renewable energy mix in the Netherlands is dominated by intermittent sources such as wind and solar and, conventional hydropower production is hindered because of the country’s unfavourable topography and strict environmental restrictions. This paper studies the possibility of unlocking hidden low head hydro potential at existing water infrastructures that serve purposes other than generating power, as a showcase solution that can be applied in similar geographical contexts and hydraulic conditions.
