The threat to dams in earthquakes

While earthquakes are among the most deadly of natural hazards, dams generally perform well, and failures resulting directly from earthquakes are rare. But indirect risks may be overlooked, as discussed here. The author offers comments on both the strengths and the vulnerabilities of various types of dams to earthquakes as well as other events, such as landslides, which may be extremely serious whether triggered by earthquakes or by other causes.
