Study on a seawater pumped-storage concept for the Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands will be increasing its solar and wind capacity in the coming years, and will therefore require storage. This paper presents a study on the possible use of seawater pumped storage. QGIS [20201], an open-source geographical information system has been used to develop an algorithm to determine potential sites, based on pre-determined multi-criteria, considering both spatial and topographical elements and most of the local restrictions. The method could be applied to small island developing states, or larger islands without cable connections with the mainland, and also to areas around existing natural or artificial lakes.
