Sediment problems at La Garita run-of-river plant, Costa Rica

La Garita hydro plant in Costa Rica, like many others in the region with small reservoirs or peaking ponds to supply peak energy demand, has been facing problems of sedimentation. The collapse of the scheme’s desander exacerbated this problem. A dredging system based on new technology was recently installed at the reservoir, which uses gravity as the driving force to remove the sediment, without requiring an external power source.
