Obervermunt II: A flexible pumped-storage scheme

Alpine storage and pumped-storage hydropower plant complexes such as the Obere Ill-Lünersee are ideal for the task of providing peak load and balancing energy. The individual sites of the Illwerke powerplant group have been developed as a whole, taking into account water management, topographic and geological requirements, as well as the environment. The group of plants has been providing power to the European grid since the Vermunt plant was commissioned in 1930. The Obervermunt II plant will be the second largest Illwerke plant and will provide peak load and balancing energy. The aim is to provide additional balancing energy and corresponding capacities for the intake of power for temporary storage.
