New paradigms on sediment management for reservoir and river basin sustainability in Japan

Current methods used in Japan to manage the problem of reservoir sedimentation are discussed, and the authors review new approaches which are being adopted, and the resulting advantages. Some case studies are described, and the authors stress the importance of exchanging experience to help advance international best practice in managing sedimentation to improve reservoir sustainability.
