Measuring internal settlements at the Romaine 3 rockfill dam in Canada

This paper describes how internal settlements of the upstream and downstream shells of the Romaine 3 dam were measured, using multiple automatic shape-measuring instruments. This new technology in dam engineering allowed for the determination of representative in situ deformation moduli for each rockfill zone. These measurements helped confirm the effectiveness of the rockfill placement and compaction procedures, and provided a comparison basis to estimate the rigidity of other existing dams.
