Kaplan turbine retrofit based on numerical simulation

The Lopet hydropower plant in Norway is equipped with a vertical Kaplan turbine originally installed in 1970, and upgraded in 2013 by Alstom Hydro. The original turbine had an installed capacity of 24.36 MW for a rated net head of 18 m. The aim of the upgrading works was to increase the output to 29 MW for the same net head, and to increase the efficiencies across the operating range. To achieve this, Alstom designed a new runner, the process of which is described in this paper.
