The Government of Papua New Guinea aims to provide electricity to 70 per cent of its population by 2030. The abundant hydropower potential in the country, if it can be effectively developed as a source of renewable energy, will be a huge help in meeting this goal in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. This article provides an overview of the nation’s potential, policy and plans for hydropower development, along with some details of some specific projects which have been identified for implementation as priorities.
