Hydro resources can represent a rich source of income for some of the poorest regions of the world. Taking the example of a Himalayan region where a major programme of hydro development is under way, the author discusses ways to maximize the benefits of the hydro schemes for local communities, and to ensure that the revenue stream is sustainable beyond the implementation of the projects.
