Gambia’s power issues within the West African Power Pool

This paper introduces the format and mission of the West African Power Pool, established in 1999, and delineates key developments within the context of regional electricity production and demand. West African countries generally suffer from very low per capita electricity consumption levels, and have vast potential for future hydropower development. Two new hydro complexes (Sambangalou 128 MW and Kaléta 240 MW) are also discussed here, along with associated international transmission lines.
