Design and construction of the Quxue asphalt core rockfill dam

Asphalt cores are flexible, and can accommodate large settlements of embankment dams and foundations. The 174 m-high Quxue dam, constructed in a narrow gorge with a steep left abutment of about 70°, is the highest asphalt core rockfill dam (ACRD) in the world. This paper describes the design, special investigations and construction of the dam, focusing on the asphalt core.
