India ranks third in the world in terms of the number of its large dams, and ensuring the safety of these existing dams is paramount, and responsibility of dam owners. This paper discusses the challenges associated with the construction of dams in the country, safety initiatives, the implementation of rehabilitation projects, and how the landmark Dam Safety Act of 2021 has introduced a paradigm shift in the way India manages, operates and maintains its dams.
