Air entrainment challenges at the 45 MW Küblis scheme, Switzerland

The Küblis plant has experienced air entrainment problems since its construction in the early 20th Century. Air regularly accumulated within the power waterways and released rapidly at the main intake as a 10 m high discharge. Analysis of the hydraulic system is described and the modified scheme, which has now operated successfully for more than a year, is reported.
