The Sunni dam hydroelectric project, also known as Luhri Stage-III, is a run of river type scheme that is designed to harness the hydropower potential of the Satluj river between the upstream 412 MW Rampur hydropower plant and dam, which in-turn utilizes water discharged from the further upstream 1500 MW Nathpa-Jhakri plant and the 800 MW Kol Dam Hydroelectric project, which lies downstream. There are currently six operating hydropower plants on the Satluj river between Nathpa-Jhakri and the Kol dam over a stretch of approximately 250 km. The Sunni dam project is part of the Luhri project, which is designed to comprise three hydropower dams; Luhri Stage-I (210 MW), Luhri Stage-II (163 MW), and Sunni dam (382 MW). The project, which envisages the construction of a ±71m high concrete gravity dam across the river Satluj and an underground power house on the right bank, is proposed to generate 1369 GWh in a 90 per cent dependable year.
