Bids invited for fish passage solution at Iron Gates dams

The objective of this pilot project is to assess technical solutions for opening a migration route for sturgeon at the Iron Gates hydropower dams.

Directorate General for the Environment of the European Commission invites bids by 19 October for a pilot project to make the Iron Gate hydropower dams on the Danube river on the border between Romania and Serbia passable for sturgeon.

There is no ready-to-use design/solution, and considering the size of the dams (among the largest in Europe), the size of the fish (up to 7 m) and also the local terrain surrounding the Iron Gates, the project necessitates innovative approaches. The project will have clear EU added value as it will contribute to achieving the environmental objectives of the water framework directive, the habitats directive, and the Bern Convention. It will also promote cross-border co-operation between the EU and its neighbours. The 36-month contract, which has a budgeted value of €2 million (exclusive of VAT), is to be financed by European Union funds through the Pilot Projects/Preparatory Actions programme.
