Various hydraulic design considerations for the selection of spillways and energy dissipators for run-of-river projects in the Himalayan region are discussed. The authors emphasize that although no design procedures are readily available for these types of structure, useful guidelines can be based on the experience from hydraulic model studies and prototypes to evolve suitable layouts for spillways, energy dissipators and power intakes.
