Design, construction and social benefits of the Santa Cruz development, Argentina

To develop the rich water resources of the mountainous southern region of Argentina effectively, and to ease the power shortage in the country, China Gezhouba Group Corporation is working with local companies in Argentina to build the world’s southernmost hydropower complex. The Condor Cliff and La Barrancosa plants will have a combined capacity of 1310 MW, and will play a key role in Argentina’s strategic plan for industry. This article gives a brief description of each of the two plants, and focuses on the environmental mitigation measures taken, and the social benefits of the development.
