The authors compare dam safety risk evaluation guidelines in various parts of the world, observing how these differ, and recommend a risk-informed approach to dam safety management. Implications of the approach to selecting risk evaluation criteria are discussed, particularly in the context of societal risk. Consideration is given to the application of risk-based decision making in India.
