Modernization and ecological enhancements of submerged turbines

Developments in inverter and generator technologies have enabled propeller turbines, running at a wide range of variable speeds, to become an established advancement from the turbines invented by Viktor Kaplan in 1912. This article describes three examples of powerplants that have been completed, or are currently underway, with fully submerged, compact variable speed propeller turbines designed to maximize output, while taking ecological aspects into consideration.
