Hydropower review for Sub-Saharan Africa

Only 35 per cent of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has access to electricity, leaving 589 million people and almost 10 million small and medium enterprises without reliable access, which results in a crippling effect on economic growth and development. A recent study by the World Bank has reviewed data for 65 schemes (> 50 MW) at various stages of implementation across the region, as well as more than 200 others for which financial closure has not yet been reached. The study reflects on the perspectives of the various principal investors in the region and future development opportunities.
