Medium and large hydro generators have followed the principle of distributed double layer windings for a long time, and these are the ‘veins’ of every large machine. This paper will look at three case studies showing the advantages and disadvantages of the three common winding types and demonstrating the impact of bar winding, wave winding and coil windings on modern machines.
