Commissioned in 1988, the Kiambere station, which straddles the border of Embu and Kitui Counties, comprises two 84 MW vertical Francis turbine generators. The original 72 MW units were upgraded in 2008-09. The power station, which is part of the Seven Forks Scheme, is sited near a 110 m-high earth-filled embankment dam, with water from an intake on the saddle dam fed through a 4060 m-long headrace tunnel to the underground powerhouse.
