Transboundary project benefits: A review of the Angololo project planned between Kenya and Uganda

The Angololo multipurpose water resource development project is located on the transboundary Malaba river, between Kenya and Uganda in the Nile Basin. The project is expected to benefit at least 300 000 people from the two countries through employment creation, irrigated agriculture, water supply, hydropower generation, and livestock and fisheries production. The project identification and subsequent studies were made through the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) which is one of the two investment arms of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI). The project represents an example of strong commitment between countries for regional cooperation. The back-ground to the project is discussed here, along with achievements so far, key features, implementation arrangements and challenges faced.
