Future plans and benefits at the Sendje hydro project, Equatorial Guinea

The Sendje hydropower project is an ongoing development in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Central Africa. It will be part of a cascade on the river Wélé, located downstream of the Djibloho powerplant at the southern part of the mainland about 40 km south of the city of Bata. Since 2020, the project has been led by the National Office of Planning and Monitoring of Projects, GE-Proyectos, on behalf of the Ministry of Industry and Energy. With the main excavation works already finished and the main structures under construction, project completion is expected soon. AFRY Switzerland was hired by GE-Proyectos in 2021 to perform an independent audit of the project, which was carried out in the first half of 2022 to support continuation of the project. This paper discusses the technical specifications of the project, the project history and organization, some of the design changes and the benefits of the project.
