Hydropower development in Japan

This article traces the political, economic and technical factors which have influenced hydropower and pumped-storage development in Japan over the past 120 years. The variety of hydropower plants, ranging from small-scale run-of-river schemes to those with large dams, are introduced, along with some of the innovative technologies of recent years associated with recent upgrading and refurbishment programmes. Current priorities and challenges are also discussed.
