Comparing feasibility studies for the Magwagwa multipurpose project

In this study, the outcomes of the current feasibility study for Magwagwa are compared with the feasibility study conducted in 1991, demonstrating how development priorities have changed over the last 20 years, particularly with regard to more rigorous attention to environmental and social aspects as part of the development of a large dam. Other important factors that have resulted in changes to the design include: the availability of improved technology such as, GIS, surveying techniques and hydropower design software that have allowed the design to be better optimized; and, changing costs of construction and technology that allow the provision of a higher net annual energy production now than was envisaged in 1991.
