Cambambe hydro complex will double Angola’s hydro capacity

The Cambambe hydroelectric schemes now going ahead on the Kwanza river, Angola, will eventually more than double the installed hydro capacity of the country. Cambambe 1, constructed in the 1960s, is undergoing rehabilitation and upgrading, and a new 700 MW scheme, Cambambe 2 has had its basic design finalized, the executive design started, and civil works now going ahead. Both developments are described here, with emphasis on hydrological and hydraulic aspects, including the hydraulic scale model studies currently underway for the structures, particularly for the sluiceway of Cambambe 1.
