Progress at the Manuel Piar (Tocoma) hydro plant

Electrificación del CaroníCA (EDELCA), the leading Government-owned company in Venezuela’s domestic electricity sector, has been progressively developing the hydro potential of the Lower Caroni river, in the southeast of the country (Guayana region). The system consists of four plants with a total rated capacity of 17 286 MW, supplying 74 170 GWh/year of firm energy from an average turbined flow of 4805 m3/s. Production of this clean and reliable energy makes it possible to save the equivalent of 182 million barrels of oil per year, which would be required to produce the same quantity of energy with fossil fuel.
