Baixo Sabor: a strategically important scheme for Portugal

The Baixo Sabor project is under construction on the Sabor river, a right tributary of the Douro. The scheme is fundamental for regulation of the Portuguese Douro basin, which has strategic importance in the management of a hydro cascade development further downstream. This article looks at the reasons for development of the scheme, its main design features, its multiple benefits and environmental mitigation measures which have been taken.
