The scope of the works, which is being financed by the World Bank, include rehabilitation of the dam embankment, including the spillway, repair and/or replacement of the instrumentation system and refurbishment of the electrical and mechanical equipment, which have suffered from a lack of regular maintenance over the years. Contract completion period is 12 months. The Dadin Kowa dam, which is situated near the village of Dadin Kowa about 37 km north of Gombe town, is the country’s second largest dam, impounding a reservoir with a surface area of 300 km2, a design storage capacity of 2.8 x 106m3 and a live storage capacity of 1.77 x 106m3. The 42 m-high earth and rockfill dam, which was completed in 1984, provides drinking water for the town. It has an associated 39 MW hydropower facility.
