The contracted work, which will involve the replacement of the main generation units to increase their installed capacity over a scheduled period of 64 months, has an estimated total value, excluding VAT, of Croatian Kuna 330 million (US$ 51.4 million), according to the tender notice.
Located in Varaždin County, near the city of Varaždin, in the northwestern part of Croatia, covering the river section from Ormož to Varaždin, the plant first started producing electricity in 1975. It is a low pressure, derivation plant with storage (8 hm3) for daily flow regulation. The plant has two main units with Kaplan turbines of 47 MW each and includes a small reconstructed plant (Varaždin C) with a single Kaplan unit with installed power of 0.635 MW on the right side of the dam used to discharge the minimum environmental flow of 8 m3/s downstream into the old riverbed. The plant generates average annual production of 450 GWh. In addition to the production of electricity, HPP Varaždin provides ancillary services to the system including tertiary regulation and black start. It is the first of three multi-purpose hydropower plants on the Drava, which, in addition to electricity production, participate in water supply, flood defense, soil protection from erosion and irrigation.
